Since I only use my Facebook platform as the only source to engage my community in health education, so today let’s talk about the PILL “Akaweke”. The generation born in the 90’s and 2000s (1997,1998,1999, 2000 to 2004) are the highest users of the pill because they are the most sexually active group in Uganda (18 – 25 years). And the reason could be attributed that they are exposed and not in control of the parents. (The University students).
A survey made around the public universities in Kampala results indicated that 6/10 female students preferred using a pill than a condom. Also results indicated that so many girls preferred sex with no condom than sex with a condom. When you look at the price of an emergency pill at the facilities / clinics and drug shops around these universities the price is 10,000/= ($2.63) their last price is 8,000/= ($2.10) but these guys tell you that the rate of an emergency pill on weekends surpasses the rate of condoms. But let’s understand these questions;
An emergency contraceptive pill is only used during situations of emergencies like unprotected intercourse such as one night stand situations these usually happen during campus nights, situations of rape and also situations where the condom has broken or wrong use of contraceptives such a person on family but they have used it wrongly or the method has failed. And this should be used within the first 72 hours (3 days) after having unprotected sexual intercourse, But the earlier you take the pill the more effective the pill is and the moment the pill is taken one should stop having unprotected sexual intercourse until they receive their next menstrual periods.
This pill is not recommended to use it more than once in a month and not recommended to use as a main form of contraception. Side effects from the use of emergency contraceptive pill are similar to those of oral contraceptive pills, such as nausea and vomiting, slight irregular vaginal bleeding, and fatigue. Side effects are not common, they are mild, and will normally resolve without further medications. Little is known that this pill can cause infertility if used so many times.
