It's RED EYES Awareness

Red eyes have in recent times had people in Uganda looking over their shoulder.
This disease, scientifically known as conjunctivitis, by definition, This is the swelling or redness (inflammation) of the thin clear layer that covers the white surface of the eye and the inner eyelid.


Globally, the condition has been a prevalent eye disorder that affects million of persons yearly, with its impact being particularly significant in low-income settings, where access to healthcare and proper sanitation is limited hence leading to its spread and severity (Azari & Barney, 2013).


In Africa, the condition poses a significant public health challenge, the disease prevalence has been increased by various factors like environmental factors hat is dust and dry climates, and socioeconomic factors like inadequate infrastructure and poor hygiene practices(mondiale de la Santé & Organization, 2020). Uganda, which is an East African nation, usually experiences a high incidence of conjunctivitis, mostly in the rural areas where healthcare is limited. Much as Uganda has been a major beneficiary of international health initiatives for the combating of trachoma through mass drug administration and health education campaigns, the fight against conjunctivitis or pink eyes goes beyond trachoma. The country is often faced with outbreaks of viral and bacterial conjunctivitis often exacerbated by seasonal changes and overcrowded living condition

IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ARE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY:

  • Eye injury or trauma

  • Blurry Vision or vision loss

  • Eye pains

  • Headache

  • Sudden redness.

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Foreign body sensation

  • Fever

  • Itchy, grainy/scratch feeling in the eyes

  • Swollen lymph nodes

  • Throbbing eye pain when you bend

  • Swelling of eye lids

  • Discharge (watery or pus like) make eyelids sticky



IF YOU HAVE A RED EYE DUE TO INFECTION, ALLERGY OR IRRITATION:

Do not panic, as the condition is self-limiting

  • Flush the eye with water

  • Wash your hands regularly and before applying medicine in the eye

  • Protect eyes from bright light

  • Get some rest and rehydrate yourself

  • If using contact lenses, remove and use eye glasses

  • Clean and wash eye glasses with water and soap

  • Use warm or cold compress ver

  • Use over-the-counter eye drops

  • VISIT an eye specialist if symptoms persist for medical treatment

  • DOs


  • Wash your hands with soap frequently

  • Wash face with water and soap as often as possible

  • Clean eyes with tissue and safely discard used tissues

  • Use sanitizer whenever necessary

  • Wear sun glasses outdoors

  • Remove contact lenses before sleeping

  • Clean contact lenses properly before use

  • Get enough sleep and rest your eyes

  • DON'Ts


  • Avoid crowds

  • Avoid use of hankies

  • Avoid sharing makeup or eye Products

  • Avoid touching eyes

  • Avoid scratching your eyes

  • Avoid smoking and stay hydrated

  • Do not apply random things into your eyes e.g tea leaves, urine, mujaja, kakomera, kasubi, etc

  • Don’t use steroids as they can reduce the eyes ability to fight infection

What is Causing the current red eyes infections?

  • Viral

  • Secondary bacterial infections

Remember, prevention and prompt action can help alleviate red eye symptoms and prevent complications!
